Outer Hebrides
The Outer Hebrides sit off the west coast of Scotland and each inter-connected island has its own unique way of life. The Hebridean islands offer powder-white beaches, wild Atlantic waves, diverse wildlife and vibrant Gaelic culture.
Many thanks to Wilco Dragt for setting out a great photo trip to this part of Scotland. See the Nordic Vision website for more information.
Lewis and Harris is one island. The upper part is Lewis, which is somewhat flatter, and the lower part Harris. Harris is hilly with peaks to just above 300 metres. A major industry on the island is the production of Harris tweed fabric (Clò Mór or Clò Hearach in Gaelic) which is made by hand on the island.
On Lewis, a visit to the Callanish Standing Stones, the ‘Stonehenge’ of the north, is well worthwhile. Beautiful beaches are mostly found on the west coast of Harris. For lovers of long exposure photography, a great spot.
There is one manufacturer of Scotch whisky and gin in Isle of Harris, namely the Isle of Harris Distillery, which opened in 2019. On a rainy day, this was a welcome destination.
